About The Conference

The purpose of Rethinking Addiction is to bring together citizens from all facets of our community to work on the most effective, impactful strategies and initiatives related to the public health crisis of addiction.

Together we're currently engaged in creating stronger, deeper connections between non-profits, service providers, and those in recovery. We're also assisting to build connections with local coalitions that support the work being done in the substance use disorder field. We are collaborating to create region-wide initiatives that will better educate the community on how we can actively make the place we call home a true trauma responsive recovery community.

This year, our conference is focused on providing trauma informed care and trauma responsive treatment for individuals that provide SUD interventions. Our strategies are aimed at family supports, peer supports, clinicians, therapists, court staff, and medical professionals. We are committed to creating resources and infrastructure that provide safe interactions for those in our community who need a place to turn during recovery and beyond.

Meet The Speakers

Lisa Najavits, PhD

Lisa Najavits, PhD is director of Treatment Innovations; and adjunct professor, University of Massachusetts Medical School. She was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School for 25 years and a research psychologist at Veterans Affairs Boston for 12 years. Her major areas of work are addiction, trauma, development of new treatment models, and clinical trials research. She is author of over 200 professional publications and various books. Her awards include the Betty Ford Award of the Addiction Medical Education and Research Association; the Young Professional Award of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies; the Early Career Contribution Award of the Society for Psychotherapy Research; and the Emerging Leadership Award of the American Psychological Association Committee on Women. She was president of the Society of Addiction Psychology of the American Psychological Association; and serves on various advisory boards. She is a practicing clinical psychologist and supervisor.

Steve Wiland, LMSW, ICADC, CCS

Steve is a psychiatric social worker and addictions counselor, with 30 years of experience working with clinically complex populations. Following 23 years of service in the public behavioral health sector as case manager, therapist, supervisor, clinical director and administrator, he currently serves as the Director of the University of Michigan’s Addiction Certificate Program as well as teaching part-time for U-M’s School of Social Work, and providing private-practice trauma and addictions counseling. A popular conference speaker and purveyor of the resource-rich Integrated Recovery website (www.integratedrecovery.org), Steve’s own lived experience of long-term dual recovery significantly informs his counseling, teaching and training efforts.

Cost for registration with CEU's is $75. General admission registration is $50.
